Up from the ashes: CDG poised to grow after near tragedy
Explosion in 2000 put company in the headlines, now it´s on the cusp of success.

decade ago, CDG Technology´s then-promising future was a pile of smoldering ashes at Lehigh University´s Jordan Hall labs.
A pipe filled with sodium chlorite — a key ingredient in the company´s primary product: chlorine dioxide disinfectant — caught fire, torching a laboratory the company was using in cooperation with Ben Franklin Technology Partners, and landing the company in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
A similar fire at supplier Composite Particles in Allentown weeks later put the company´s proprietary technology in doubt.
Now, with new ownership, a reformulated product and several key federal approvals that could open new markets, company officials hope the Bethlehem-based CDG Environmental, which employs 12 people there and at an Allentown plant, is ready to turn a corner and possibly grow tenfold.
"The accident we had was a turning point," said CDG Chief Executive David Morris. "They identified what did cause it, and corrected it."
One of the results of that research is Solution 3000, a stable, shippable, read-to-use liquid form of the CDG disinfectant that won approval late last year from the Food and Drug Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency and kosher authorities, for use in preventing contamination at food processors and other activities.
The new markets are a significant expansion from the company´s prior customer-base, made up mostly of private and municipal water treatment system operators.
"We recognized the high-value applications, food processing, horticulture, is where we really needed to be," Morris said. Cracking open new markets takes time, but early trials with new customers in those fields have been promising, he said.
The company recently hired a West Coast salesman to expand the product´s reach.
But it still faces competition from some big players. DuPont and several other companies manufacture chlorine dioxide products that are used as disinfectants. DuPont, for example, offers several stable Chlorine Dioxide solutions, but unlike Solution 3000, they must be activated with the addition of an acid.
Chlorine dioxide is highly volatile and has been known to ignite when exposed to sunlight at certain concentrations, which makes shipping it as a gas nearly impossible.
CDG´s Solution 3000 dissolves the gas in water in a pure, stable, shippable form
